He is one of the few individuals to canoe the full length of the Devils River without a guide, and his photos taken in a remote part Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve have been featured in a book on North American National Parks. Prior to suffering a knee injury, he also completed a full Marathon in Houston, TX on his first try. Since 2009, when his daughter, Jules, started kindergarten, Joel has also been an active parent reader and Global Volunteer in Cypress Fairbanks School District.
