As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Taylor High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Mayde Creek High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Taylor High School’s regular student population is 3,038 with a student-teacher ratio of 17.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Mayde Creek High School is 2,827 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15 students/teacher ratio.
Taylor High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 88 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Mayde Creek High School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 84 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 82 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Taylor High School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Mayde Creek High School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Science, Social Studies and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Taylor High School. They make up for 40.39% of student population, followed by Hispanics (29.33%), Asians (15.44%), African Americans (10.30%), Two or More Races (4.15%) and Native Americans (0.23%).
At Mayde Creek High School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 57.23% of student population, followed by African Americans (21.83%), Whites or Caucasians (12.70%), Asians (5.45%), Two or More Races (2.26%) and Native Americans (0.42%).
Based on household incomes, the Taylor High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 35.71% compared to 73.93% at Mayde Creek High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Taylor High School has 304 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 10.01% of student population. Mayde Creek High School has significantly more ELLs at 452 or about 15.99% of student population.
Taylor High School’s bilingual students comprise 9.35%, gifted and talented students, 11.72%, while 10.01% are in the special education program. Mayde Creek High School bilingual students comprise 15.60%, gifted and talented students, 5.09%, and 13.05% are in the special education program.
Taylor High School's 177 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 13.9 years. Mayde Creek High School's 188 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 11 years.
Of its teaching staff, Taylor High School has seven teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 35 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 58 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 42 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 31 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Mayde Creek High School has six teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 25 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 55 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 27 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 62 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 14 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Taylor High School employs 103 female teachers and 74 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 22 special education teachers are being assisted by 32 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs eight staff members in the school administration department and 24 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Mayde Creek High School employs 107 female teachers and 80 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 28 special education teachers are being assisted by 32 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs eight staff members in the school administration department and 23 more working as school support staff.
