Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Stockdick Junior High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Adams Junior High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Stockdick Junior High School’s regular student population is 1,128 with a 14.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Adams Junior High School is 1,610 students and a 18.3 students/teacher ratio.
Stockdick Junior High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 86 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 93 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Adams Junior High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 95 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 97 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only four distinction designations or awards for outstanding performance. For Stockdick Junior High School these are in Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps while Adams Junior High School secured in Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Stockdick Junior High School. They make up for 48.58% of student population, followed by African Americans (23.94%), Whites or Caucasians (16.84%), Asians (7.54%), Two or More Races (2.84%) and Native Americans (0.18%).
The student population at Adams Junior High School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 42.92%, followed by Asians (23.48%), Hispanics (21.86%), African Americans (8.20%), Two or More Races (3.23%) and Native Americans (0.19%).
Based on household incomes, Stockdick Junior High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 47.07% compared to 11.37% at Adams Junior High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Stockdick Junior High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 17.55% of its student population compared to 7.83% at Adams Junior High School.
In addition, Stockdick Junior High School has 16.58% bilingual students, 6.29% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.67% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Adams Junior High School with 7.02% bilingual students, 16.46% gifted and talented students and 9.88% students in the special education program.
Stockdick Junior High School's 76 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 5.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.8 years. In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Stockdick Junior High School there are 61 female teachers and 15 male teachers.
