Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Martha Reid Academy, which is a part of MANSFIELD ISD, with Cora Spencer Elementary School, which is a part of MANSFIELD ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Martha Reid Academy has a regular student population of 484 with a 13.7 students/teacher ratio while Cora Spencer Elementary School has 661 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.5 students/teacher ratio.
Martha Reid Academy earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 88 in student achievement, 81 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Cora Spencer Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 86 in closing performance gaps and 91 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Martha Reid Academy and Cora Spencer Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Martha Reid Academy. They make up for 37.19% of student population, followed by African Americans (26.03%), Hispanics (25.83%), Asians (7.02%) and Two or More Races (3.93%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Cora Spencer Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 40.09%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (21.33%), Asians (17.10%), Hispanics (16.64%), Two or More Races (4.39%) and Native Americans (0.45%).
Based on household incomes, Martha Reid Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 40.08% compared to 23.60% at Cora Spencer Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Martha Reid Academy has 67 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 13.84% of student population. Cora Spencer Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 103 or about 15.58% of student population.
Martha Reid Academy’s bilingual students comprise 13.64%, gifted and talented students, 3.93%, while 11.36% are in the special education program. Cora Spencer Elementary School bilingual students comprise 15.13%, gifted and talented students, 2.87%, and 9.23% are in the special education program.
35 teachers employed at Martha Reid Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.4 years. The 42 teachers at Cora Spencer Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Martha Reid Academy no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Cora Spencer Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while five teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
