3 Things to consider when relocating

When moving to a new location their are things you need to consider. Depending on what your reason is for moving, different items may rank higher on your list than others. I will discuss three things that I believe everyone should consider before relocating.

As a veteran and a Military Relocation professional I know first hand the challenges that you may face when having to relocate. I have lived in two different countries and about eight states. Most of those moves happened on my own as an adult. I lived in Maryland, Virginia, Alaska, Arizona, Texas, New York, District of Columbia, and Mississippi. I am sure if I dug deep enough I could think of other places I have lived. But you get the point. Moving frequently gave me an idea of what I believe are the three most important things to consider.

Some of the items I will list may not be as important to you because it will depend on if you have family and the amount of time you will be living in that particular area.

                                                          ECONOMY

1) The economy should be number one on everyone's list when thinking about moving. Things like job market, cost of living and population are things worth looking into. If you are single, this may not matter to you as much but if you have a family this maybe very important. Suitable employment for you and your spouse, how much money it would cost for housing, and the cost of childcare. The economy can either be great or so expensive you find it hard to afford necessities. Also consider if your spouse is unable to find a job would you be able to sustain with one income?

                                                          HOUSING

2) The median price of homes is something that most people do not pay a lot of attention to. However, this is important based off your housing allowance from your company or Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) if you are military. A military member gets a certain amount of BAH and knowing the median cost of homes in that location can help you make a decision to stay on or off base. If you are a civilian who is relocating, knowing how much you will need to purchase a home is important when budgeting. Also knowing the median price for housing can help in a rent vs buy situation.

                                                           SAFETY

3) Safety should be high on your list whether you are single or you have a family. Consider looking up the crime rate and school data for the area you are relocating to. If you are a military member, this is especially important as your work schedule maybe unpredictable.
