Look, Listen and Ask

It’s an important decision in choosing a daycare provider. The Missouri City and Sugar Land areas offer many options. When you follow these three tips to Look, Listen, and Ask you will gain the information you need to make the best choice for your family.

Look

Schedule a tour to visit the location. Visiting gives you an opportunity to see firsthand how the programs operate. You can see how the children and teachers are interacting. You can see what the classrooms and play spaces look like. Look for these things:

  • Do the teachers greet each child?
  • Do the teachers speak with a child at their level? (by sitting, kneeling or crouching to be eye-to-eye with the child)
  • What’s the classroom layout like? Can teachers see all of the children or are there numerous areas blocked from their view?
  • Does the area look clean, tidy, and include a variety of toys or learning resources? Also take note of any unpleasant odors.
  • Does the play equipment look safe and age appropriate?
  • Are the children encouraged to frequently wash their hands to help curb the spread of germs?

Listen

Listen to how the teachers and children are speaking with each other. Listen to the feedback from other parents who enroll their children at this care center. Check the online reviews. Are the overall reviews positive and praising or complaints? Listen for these things:

  • Do you hear sounds of laughter and play? (happy children sounds)
  • Do you hear the sounds of nurture and care in the teachers’ voices as they interact with the children and teach lessons or sing songs?
  • Do you hear respect and professionalism as the teachers interact with each other?

Ask

Don’t hesitate or feel awkward about wanting more information or asking any questions you may have. The daycare provider should want to help you understand how they care for children so you are comfortable. Be sure to ask these things:

  • What is the ratio of teachers to children in each classroom?
  • How does the program handle challenging child behavior?
  • Does the program have a family handbook outlining rates, their philosophy, drop-off/pick-up times, holiday closure dates, and all of necessary information families need to know about how they operate?
  • Are families permitted to drop-in and visit?
  • Are snacks and meals provided?
  • Does the program document and share the details of the child’s day with the family?
  • Ask about the training and certification of the teachers and the director.
  • What is the policy for sick children, distributing medication, and determining when a sick child should stay home?
  • How often do children play outside?
